Navy renews Halliburton contract for $500 million
27 July 2004
WASHINGTON, July 27 (HalliburtonWatch.org) -- The United States Navy today renewed its "construction capabilities" (or CONCAP) contract with Halliburton's KBR subsidiary. The contract was first awarded to KBR in 2001, four months after former CEO Dick Cheney became vice president. Under CONCAP, KBR built the prison facilities at Guatanamo Bay, Cuba in 2002 -- the prison system that holds suspected al-Qaeda terrorists. The company had also constructed and repaired airfield runways in Italy and Spain, constructed and repaired a breakwater facility in the Azores, and constructed military and civilian facilities in Iraq and Kuwait. Under the contract, the Navy may direct KBR to provide construction services at any time and under short notice. The total value of the contract renewal announced today is $500 million over the next five years. CONCAP was awarded to KBR by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Atlantic Division. KBR provides similar construction and other services to the U.S. Army under its LOGCAP contract.
